What Makes A Mobile RPG Actually Worth Your Time
I've installed more mobile RPGs than I care to admit, and most of them lose me within an hour. The pattern is always the same: a flashy opening, then twelve menus and a lot of tapping through dialogue you can't read fast enough.
The good ones do the opposite. They introduce systems slowly and give combat real decisions. Embercrown Saga, which we reviewed recently, is a great example — you can see what the enemy plans to do, so every turn is a small puzzle rather than a numbers race.
My advice when trying a new RPG is to judge the third hour, not the first. The opening is always polished. What matters is whether the combat still asks something of you once the tutorial hand-holding stops.
Also, watch how it treats your time. A good mobile RPG lets you save and quit anywhere. If it forces you into long unskippable sequences, that's a game designed for a screen you're staring at, not one you dip into on a train.
